Caravan & motorhome
All you need to know
If it is clear which driving licence you need, you can register online via our website. Go to the appropriate driving licence page and choose the training course you want to take. Are you also a member of the Vlaamse Kampeertoeristen? Be sure to mention this when registering, and you will enjoy a nice discount.
Which licence you need for a caravan depends on the total weight of the combination (car + caravan).
If the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the combination does not exceed 3500 kg, a driving licence B is sufficient.
If you want to tow a trailer with an MAM of more than 750kg (max. 3500kg) with a category B vehicle and the MAM of the combination exceeds 4250kg (max. 7000kg), you need a driving licence BE.
You can also opt for a driving licence B + Code 96. Then you can use a category B vehicle to tow a trailer with an MAM of more than 750 kg, if the MAM of the combination does not exceed 4250 kg.
The driving licence BE does not require you to take another theory test.
For the motorhome, too, the type of driving licence depends on the maximum authorised mass (MAM). If this does not exceed 3500 kg, a driving licence B is sufficient. In addition, the motorhome may accommodate a maximum of 8 people (excluding the driver).
If the MAM is higher than 3500 kg and the vehicle has a maximum of 8 seats, you need a driving licence C(1). Driving licence C1 is for trucks up to 7.5 tonnes. Driving licence C is for trucks of 7.5 tonnes and above.
We have an Iveco Daily in our fleet (a small truck the size of an average motorhome) for your practical lessons, so you don’t have to learn to drive a big truck straight away.
To obtain a driving licence C(1), you do need to pass a theory test first. Also important to know: prior to your practical training, you need to undergo a medical examination.
