Questions about (online) theoretical lessons

Where can I buy theory books?
You can find all textbooks in our webshop, visit by clicking here
I failed my theory exam for driving licence B twice and need to schedule a theory course. Is an online theory course suitable?
No. You are required to take a 12-hour course and be physically present at the training. Our online theory course involves a 6h online course and is supplemented by self-study. You will not receive a certificate after taking this online course.
Do I have to do more self-study after the course?
Yes, this training consists of online lessons and pieces of self-study. Our coaches go deeper into certain chapters. Other parts of the subject matter you will have to study yourself. Don’t worry, we provide all the necessary material.
Can I rewatch the online lessons?
No, the lessons are not recorded. However, you can consult the presentations, subject matter, summaries and accompanying mock tests at any time.
How long will I have access to the learning platform after completing the training?
After completing the training, you will have access to the learning platform for another 2 months.

Questions about practical lessons

Can I also perform the practical exercises with a car with an automatic transmission?
Yes, no worries. Both manual and automatic cars are available at each location to perform the practical part.
How can I reschedule or cancel a lesson?
Do you wish to reschedule or cancel a lesson? Please contact the office where your lessons will take place.

For the cancellation or rescheduling of driving lessons and theory lessons within categories A, AM and B up to 5 working days in advance and a test coaching up to 5 working days in advance, only the administration fee will be charged. If cancelled or rescheduled at shorter notice, the full tuition fee will be due.

Courses within the scope of categories BE, C, CE, D and continuing education can be cancelled free of charge up to 10 working days before the start of the course, unless otherwise indicated. For cancellations in the period 10 to 5 working days before the start of the course, 50% of the agreed price will be charged.
Can I take driving lessons with my own car?
No, the driving lessons are conducted in a VAB Driving School car equipped with a dual control so that the instructor can intervene if necessary.
How can I notify my teacher in case of illness?
It is best to contact the office where you take your lessons immediately. You can find the opening hours in our office locator.
If your office is not open, you will automatically be put through to the cluster office in your region. They can inform the teacher. Please also forward your sick note to the office via e-mail.
Can I pay in instalments?

All lessons scheduled must also be paid immediately. It is not possible to pay in instalments. Whether online or through an office.

However, you can schedule lessons separately. For example, you can schedule and pay for 10 hours and then schedule and pay for another 10 hours afterwards.

Can I schedule lessons or courses by telephone?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. You can schedule lessons or courses via our website or by visiting the relevant office.

Can I take a defensive driving course?

Companies can apply via our website.

Individuals: An insurance company may ask to take a defensive driving course after an accident. This involves 2 hours of practical lessons during which the instructor will teach you all aspects of anticipatory driving (such as the use of mirrors and viewing techniques) and ecological driving. You can schedule this via the website by selecting a ‘free lesson block’ under ‘compose your own package’. At the start of your driving lesson, tell your instructor that you already have a driving licence and that you are coming for a defensive driving course. After the course, your instructor will give you a certificate that you can give to your insurance company. Of course, you can also schedule this course by dropping by your desired office.

Something went wrong during the payment of my reservation and now my free lesson blocks are no longer visible.
During the ordering process, chosen lessons are temporarily blocked so that other customers cannot choose them. If payment cannot be made or the ordering process is aborted, these lessons will remain blocked for 30 minutes. Afterwards, these lesson blocks will be released again for all customers.

Questions about learning to drive in a Cambio car

Learning to drive with a Cambio shared-use car, how does it work?
Thanks to the cooperation between VAB Driving School and Cambio, you can use a shared-use car to learn to drive. So renting the car also works via the normal Cambio system. You make a reservation and pick up the car at the chosen location at the chosen time. You open the car with your Cambio card. You then find the key in the car itself. Once you have registered, Cambio will give you full details of how the car works and will also send you your Cambio card.
How do I register?
You can easily register for the rental lesson car by filling in the online registration form above the FAQ section on this page and uploading the necessary documents. A Cambio employee will then contact you to process your application further and guide you through the Cambio system.
What documents do I need to register?

To complete your registration, you need to upload 3 files:

• Copy of your identity card

• Copy of your provisional driving licence (18M or 36M)

• Certificate of competence if you took 20h driving lessons

How much does it cost to use a shared-use car?

The car costs €16.50 per hour when used between 7 am and 11 pm. This includes fuel, insurance, breakdown assistance, maintenance, etc. Upon registration, you pay a one-off entry fee of €35 and a €250 finance charge (deposit), which is refunded afterwards. Each month, you will receive a statement of your driven hours payable via direct debit. This also makes you a member of Cambio and, once you have your final driving licence, you can continue to enjoy Cambio’s shared-use cars.

What are the conditions for using a shared-use car?
Since you will be driving a recent car, we ask that you have at least mastered the basics and have had at least six hours of driving lessons. You must be able to produce the certificate of lessons taken, that’s all! Have you previously taken lessons with another driving school? They are also valid.
Can I always rent the car?
In principle, you can always reserve cars. Do this in a timely fashion, so you can be sure to have a car available at the desired time. Please note: it is forbidden to drive on public roads with a provisional driving licence on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, the night before a public holiday and the night of the public holiday itself, each time from 10 pm to 6 am. So it is your own responsibility to observe this correctly.
Do I need to provide my own L-sticker and additional rear-view mirror?
All cars are provided with an L-sign on the rear window and an extra rear-view mirror for the coach. Unfortunately, we note that these items occasionally disappear. To be on the safe side, it is therefore best to provide an extra mirror and L-sign yourself when using one of the cars. You can buy these in our webshop.
I have a provisional driving licence for 18 months and can practise without a coach. Can I rent the car?
Yes, if you have taken at least 20 hours of driving lessons and received your certificate of competence, you can rent the car to gain driving experience. Of course, we recommend always practising with an experienced driver in the passenger seat anyway.
Can I take the test with a shared-use car?
Yes, you may take your test with the rental lesson car. Be sure to send an email to cambio@vlaanderen.be stating customer number and the reserved car and date. That way, Cambio’s technicians can do an extra check on the car, so you are 100% test-ready. Always book the car well in advance and make sure you have enough time to take the test and return to the original location. Also, be sure to check before you leave that all on-board documents are still present in the car.

Questions about the return moment

What is a return moment?
The return moment for driver's license B is a 4-hour training and consists of 3 parts:

• Introduction (30 minutes) and self-assessment
• Practical exercises in an enclosed area (120 minutes)
  • Stop exercise
  • Distraction exercise
  • Slalom exercise
• Group discussion (90 minutes) on driving attitude

The return moment is organized for groups of 6 to 18 people.
You do not have to take an exam after the return moment.

Be sure to arrive on time, latecomers will not be able to start the return moment and will have to re-register.
Who is a return moment for?
If you meet the following 3 conditions, you must participate in the return moment:

• you applied for or exchanged your provisional driving license to another model as of October 1, 2017 or later

• your provisional and definitive driving license have been issued in a Flemish municipality

• you live in Flanders after obtaining your final driving license.

You do not have to participate in the return moment if you:

• have applied for your provisional driving license before October 1, 2017, unless you exchanged your provisional driving license afterwards

• you applied for your provisional driving license before Oct. 1, 2017, and exchanged it afterwards (because of loss, damage, non-comparable photo or change of escort)

• you no longer officially live in Flanders after obtaining the definitive driving license.
When should I attend a return moment?
You will have to attend the return moment in the period between 6 and 9 months after issuance date of the first final car license category B. (Check this on the back of your driver's license in column 10 at the car box with the letter B.)
Notice:

• The return moment can NOT be taken before the start of this period. About 3 weeks before the start of that 3-month period, you will receive another reminder letter from the Department of Mobility and Public Works.

• It is possible that a letter may not reach you or may be lost. Not having a letter is not a valid reason not to register. If in doubt, you can always contact the DMOW (Department of Mobility and Public Works).

• If you exceed the 9-month term without having requested a valid postponement, you will have to pay a surcharge of €64 on the day you attend the return moment. You can request postponement from the DMOW because of:

• Medical reasons
• Staying abroad for work or study
• When deprived of liberty by a court order (e.g. imprisonment, compulsory admission to a psychiatric center)

This is done by filling out a form that can be found on the DMOW website. If you do not attend the return moment (on time), you risk a penalty of up to €4000.

Where can I attend the return moment?
Check out the different locations where you can take the return moment at VAB Driving School.
How can I sign up for a return moment?
Would you like to take the return moment at VAB Driving School? Book your return moment now.
What if I forgot to book my return moment?
You can still schedule a return moment up to and including 11 months after obtaining your driver's license B, subject to paying a surcharge at the location of the return moment.

Questions about the training moment for coaches

I am unable to schedule a mentor training.

Click here to schedule your mentor training. Choose under category ‘mentor training’. Then choose between an online training or a classroom session. Then proceed to fill in with your details and payment.

How can I reschedule or cancel my planned training?
Cancellation and rescheduling must be done in writing and is only possible up to 10 days before the start of the training. If it concerns an online training moment, you may send an e-mail to vormingsmoment@vabrijschool.be. If it concerns a classroom training course, you will find the e-mail address in your confirmation e-mail.
Can I practice with the student before I have taken the mentor training?
Yes, you may. If the student has a provisional driving licence, you may already start practising. It is only on the day of the practical exam that your certificate is checked. However, we recommend not postponing the training session.
What technical requirements must I meet to be able to follow an online training session?
As a participant, you are responsible for a stable internet connection and a working camera and microphone.

The camera must be on throughout the training. If you do not have a camera, the trainer will not admit you to the training and you will not receive a certificate.

Make sure you have installed the Itsme app before the start of your training so that you can register as present on the government website at the start of the training.

Please also be present at least 15 minutes in advance to complete this registration. Both for classroom and online training sessions. The training starts punctually at the indicated time. After that time, it will no longer be possible to register candidates and no one will be admitted to the training.

I have registered for an online training, but I cannot find the Teams link.
You will receive a confirmation e-mail shortly after registering. It contains a button that takes you to the Teams link. Be sure to try this one beforehand.

You will receive a reminder e-mail 24 hours before the training. This also contains the link.

If in doubt, please contact vormingsmoment@vabrijschool.be.

I have taken a mentor training before but I have lost the certificate. How can I obtain a duplicate?
If you have already taken the mentor training in 2017-2020, you can collect the duplicate at any VAB Driving School office. You may also contact vormingsmoment@vabrijschool.be.

If you took the mentor training after 1 March 2024, it is best to first contact any VAB Driving School office where you wish to collect it by phone. This way they can prepare your certificate in advance and inform you when you can collect it.

When will I receive my certificate?
Have you attended a class mentor training? Then you will receive your certificate on paper immediately after the training. If you followed an online mentor training session, you will receive your certificate by e-mail. This is usually sent shortly after the training but, in exceptional cases, may take longer, up to a maximum of 2 weeks. Keep an eye on your mailbox and do not forget to check your spam box.

Anyone who has attended a training session can also consult it in ‘My Citizen Profile’ on the website of the Flemish government. At the practical exam, the exam centre will check via "My Citizen Profile" whether the training moment has been followed. We recommend checking this yourself beforehand as well.
