Driving instructor training: theory, test and internship

Every year, VAB Driving School organises several training courses to become a driving instructor. Through this online course we prepare you for the exams for certificates II, III and IV. Lessons usually take place two evenings during the week and one day in the weekend.

After basic training, you will take exams with the government. First, you take a written exam on traffic regulations/mechanics. If you pass this, the course material will be discussed in more depth during an oral exam a few weeks later.

You can take these exams every year in January, March, May or September.

After the preliminary training and successful exams, you will receive an internship permit and be ready for the internship. The minimum number of hours of internship depends on the certificate you want to obtain:

• Certificate II (Car): Minimum 300 hours
• Certificate III (Theory): Minimum 76 hours
• Certificate IV (Motorcycle): Minimum 300 hours

The internship is divided into an observation internship (learning with your eyes), supervised internship (teaching yourself with support from a mentor) and an independent internship (without supervision).

You will be supported by a permanent experienced mentor and by the regional coaches. On top of that, you will be administratively supported to compile your internship file.

Once your internship is completed, you can sign up for the model lesson. During the model lesson, you will show a jury of driving school directors how you teach. If you pass this, you will be an officially certified driving instructor.
